Whītau School Enrolment Zone

The Whītau School Board of Trustees has an enrolment scheme, approved by the Ministry of Education, in order to avoid overcrowding, or the likelihood of overcrowding in the school.

Under the Whītau School enrolment scheme,  the geographic Home Zone shown above is legally be required to be enforced with all new enrolments.

Whītau School can only accept enrolments, at all levels of the school, for students residing in the Home Zone. This enrolment process does includes a ballot system with a waiting list for 'out of zone' enrolments.

This will ensure that Whītau School has sufficient classroom space to accommodate the growing number of 'in zone' enrolments of students at all levels of the school, until our School Roll reaches 403 students. When our School Roll reaches our capacity of 403 students, the geographic Home Zone may be reviewed by the Ministry of Education.

Formal proof of address of residence within the home zone will be required.

Out of Zone Enrolments

The Board of Trustees will operate a ballot system for 'out of zone' enrolments.

Enrolment of children who live outside the geographic Home Zone is governed by the requirements of Section 11F of the Education Act 1989, and instructions issued by the Secretary under Section 11F of the Education Act 1989.

The number of current enrolment places will be determined by the Principal on the basis of current available learning space in classrooms, current and projected class numbers and the current staffing allocation and school roll.

You will need to apply for an out of zone  place through our ballot system. We have an Out of Zone Enrolment Form to complete and return to the School Office.

Each year the board will determine the number of places which are likely to be available in the following year for the enrolment of students who live outside the home zone.  The board will publish this information by notice in a daily or community newspaper circulating in the area served by the school.  The notice will indicate how applications are to be made and will specify a date by which all applications must be received. Applications for enrolment will be processed in the following order of priority.

The order of priority in which applicants who live outside a school’s home zone are to be offered places at the school is as follows:
  1. first priority must be given to any applicant who is accepted for enrolment in a special programme run by the school.  (This priority category does not apply at Whītau School because the school does not run a special programme approved by the Secretary for Education.)
  2. second priority must be given to any applicant who is the sibling of a current student of the school;
  3. third priority must be given to any student who is the sibling of a former student of the school;
  4. fourth priority must be given to any applicant who is a child of a former student of the school;
  5. fifth priority must be given to any applicant who is either a child of an employee of the board of the school or a child of a member of the board of the school:
  6. sixth priority must be given to all other applicants.
If there are more applicants in the second, third, fourth, fifth or sixth priority groups than there are places available, selection within the priority group will be by a ballot conducted in accordance with instructions issued by the Secretary under Section 11G(1) of the Education Act 1989.  Parents will be informed of the date of any ballot by notice in a daily or community newspaper circulating in the area served by the school.

Applicants seeking second or third priority status may be required to give proof of a sibling relationship.
